Mammoth Trading has had an exciting and busy year! In 2016, cofounder and president Richael Young took the plunge and began full-time work at Mammoth. We relocated upstream to Denver, Colorado to be in our own “central hub” of Western Water.
We expanded market activity to the South Platte Natural Resources District in western Nebraska and to the Roza Irrigation District in central Washington State. The Twin Platte Natural Resources District market remains active and secured trades for its third straight year.
We’ve undertaken great projects in the last year, investigating the state of informal agricultural water trading in the US West and providing a case study on the political economy of water markets. Mammoth has continued to generate interest from the press and received invitations to present at renowned conferences and events. A selection of our engagements in 2016 is listed below.
Today, Mammoth Trading celebrates three years (“Happy birthday!”, you say? Thank you!). We are proud to be advancing the state of water markets and helping rural communities put their water to its most productive uses. We would not be here today without the support and advice of our loved ones and colleagues.
Special thanks to our Advisory Board — Yusuke Kuwayama, Karina Schoengold, and Jed Taylor — for their guidance through exciting yet challenging transitions, and to you, our customers and partners, for an unforgettable year. We look forward to another full of adventure, learning, collaboration, and trading!
White House Water Summit
At the first-ever White House Water Summit on World Water Day 2016, 120 water leaders gathered to share ideas and pledge Commitments to Action on Building a Sustainable Water Future. Mammoth’s new smart markets were featured. The entire event, including Richael’s talk, is available on YouTube.
Stockholm World Water Week
In collaboration with the Water for Food Global Institute and The Rockefeller Foundation, Mammoth hosted a live demonstration on water markets. With a packed house, we covered the basics of markets and led the group into an interactive simulation to negotiate water trades.
SARL Ag Chairs Summit
At the State Agricultural Rural Leaders’ invitation-only summit, Richael spoke on a panel addressing water scarcity and shared the potential for markets to mitigate losses. Other panelists included Kansas State Senator Carolyn McGinn and John Stulp, Special Policy Advisor on Water to the Governor of Colorado.
Water for Food Global Conference
In a world cafe format, Mammoth Trading participated in the Agricultural Entrepreneurship session, sharing pain points, value propositions, and experiences commercializing university research.
